Fancy/Funky Friday: Patterns Marilyn & Raquelle

Both of today's pattern designs feature thin lines, but the overall feel of each is very different.

First, the "fancy": Pattern Marilyn

There are so many lines in such a small space that Pattern Marilyn can feel a little busy as a large field of pattern. It works better when the pattern is larger (allowing for more white space between the lines), or in small strips rather than whole squares of pattern.

Despite its claustrophobic tendency, however, this pattern still feels quite elegant. The thin lines and organic loop forms are almost floral in shape, which makes Pattern Marilyn appropriate for formal decor and antique furniture.

And now, the "funky": Pattern Raquelle

This is one of the few times you'll ever see the week's "funky" pattern with thinner lines than the "fancy" selection. Pattern Raquelle has very thin lines, and some of the curved forms are quite elegant. But because the repetition is not quite grid-like (the stripes of pattern follow an off-kilt diagonal) and the negative white spaces have an odd modern feel, it still stays decidedly "funky."

Pattern Raquelle is also unique in that it's one of the patterns I've designed in which the characters I used to create it are still very visible in the final product. It's not hard to see the capital S and D forms that make up the pattern units, and this aspect also gives it a funkier, more playful feel than the typical "fancy" pattern.
