Fancy/Funky Friday: Patterns Lydia & Bridget

It's time for another Fancy/Funky Friday!

First, the "fancy": Pattern Lydia

The best thing about Pattern Lydia is the rhythm of the white space with the more detailed areas. It's never too busy or too heavy since there is always so much quiet space for the eye to pause if it needs to. Even the detailed areas are relatively simple and seem quiet, which makes this pattern very elegant and perfect for formal invitations that just need a touch of something interesting to add a bit of depth. I love the pattern from far away, when the details start to get lost and all you can really notice are the diamond shapes connected to each other my decorative lines.

And now the "funky": Pattern Bridget

Depending on what you consider the foreground and what you see as the background, you'll notice orange ovals or rectangles - or white lines and diamond-like shapes, especially from a distance. I love patterns like that, whose details change the more you look at them. This is a pretty loud pattern (especially when compared with Pattern Lydia, above!), but it's still pretty simplistic at its core. Still, the thick orange shapes give it a heavy feel.

Of course, that characteristic can also change depending on how the pattern is used. In one of my sample invitations, I used overlapping stripes of Pattern Bridget to add some texture into the background. Since the layers were transparent and subdued in color, the pattern wasn't too loud or attention-grabbing - it just added a bit of dynamic interest to the invitation by playing up diagonal lines.

It just goes to show - even so-called "funky" patterns can be more subtle and quiet if used appropriately. :)

Don't forget to check back next week - for the exciting 11/11/11 Fancy/Funky Friday post! ;)
